How Nice!

©Carol Reffold

It was the International Convention, they’d come from near and far
The ladies dined in the Chinese cafe - the men hung 'round the bar
The conversation of the ladies turned, as conversations do,
To how the menfolk, of these women, proved their love was true

The first, a Yank, dripped with diamonds and pearls, she started up the night,
To prove his love was true, she said, he bought her diamonds – bright!
The Greek said "wow" as she looked at the loot, the Australian ogled the ice,
but the Japanese lady put her hands together, bowed, and said 'how nice."

It was the turn of the Greek girl, she bragged of the many a home
he'd bought for her in Melbourne, in Sydney and in Rome.
The Yank said "Wow" as she thought of that loot,
The Australian just picked at her rice,
The Japanese lady put her hands together, bowed and said "How nice."

It was the turn of the Australian girl, she bragged of the cattle stations
he'd bought for her in Australia and a couple of other nations.
The Greek said "Wow," as she thought of that loot, The American just played with her rice,
But the Japanese lady put her hands together, bowed and said "How nice."

It was the turn of the Japanese Girl, to prove her man's love was alright
"I learn the English language, and go to school at night."
She thought a while, to choose her words, and then said, most precise:
"Instead of saying ‘bull-shit’ - I've learned to say, ‘How nice!’"
