Music of the Bush

© - 1999 Ric Raftis

The morning sun creeps over the hill
A symphony of colour heralds the day
The bush awakes in the morning mist
As the darkness is pushed away

Sulphur crested cockatoos screech their raucous chant
Kangaroos thump to the cover of the trees
The night birds tuck their heads under their wings
Majestic gums rustle in the breeze

The fire rises to a crackle of sparks
As fresh wood is caught by the coals
The smell of wood smoke permeates the air
And the wombat scratches at his hole

The parrots incessantly chatter
As they dance from limb to limb
A chorus of notes, a morning song
That nobody taught them to sing

A magpies warble joins the song
Another answers from below
A neighing horse completes the verse
A warm northerly begins to blow

It blends the sounds of all around
Spreading them with a gentle push
And I sit and listen with a heart full of joy
To the music of the bush.
