Normally I head a piece of verse with a bit of information about it, however, in this case it is at the end. So read the verse first and then the explanation!!!

The Mentally Disturbed Shower

© June 2000 - Ric Raftis

Things are different in the bush
Little things like having a shower
We don't have mains pressure water
So we have to rely on the power
The power keeps the pressure up
As the water goes through the pumps
Fresh rainwater for the hot water
Cold from the creek, complete with lumps

Now my shower runs exactly like this
And frustrating it is indeed
Cause the hot and cold cycle differently
As the water runs at differing speeds
It's just so bloody frustrating
The water runs from too hot, to normal, to cold
And you run round and round in the shower
Like an olympian running for gold

But I have my suspicions of the problem
It may be deeper than first appears
Perhaps the shower has a mental disorder
And is cycling in line with its fears
So I carefully typed out the problem
And posted a message on the net
With a world wide audience of millions
An answer would be a fair bet

A response from a lady called Willow
Confirmed my own diagnosis was true
The shower has bi-polar disorder
And a bloody rapid cycler to boot
But she gave me a marvellous suggestion
Poor some lithium down the drain
Give it six to eight weeks to stabilise its moods
And it should regain its composure again!!

This piece of verse is a light hearted look of what can only be described as a serious illness. Bi Polar Disorder (formerly known as Manic Depression) affects around 1 in 50 people. Whilst television and the press have given a lot of coverage to Depression in recent times, very little has been mentioned about this disorder. People affected can cycle between extreme highs and extreme lows and everything in between. Whilst medication in the form of Lithium and other drugs is used in attempting to stabilise moods, bi polars also deal in a bit of self medication as well such as alchohol, cigarettes etc.
