Social Workers

© Ric Raftis - December 2002

I was feeling down and out, my bottom lip hung from my mouth
So a social worker it was I sought to see
I rang the community nurse, who referred me on of course
And best of all the services were free

An appointment duly made and although feeling quite afraid
I kept it and told her all inside my head
My thoughts were in confusion, I just wanted some solution
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said

I told her of the times, when I was just a child
Of how I felt rejected, left for dead
How these feelings of rejection were causing me dejection
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said

Now I was really feeling confused, while she sat there quite bemused
I took a moment for my thoughts to get collected
My problems I tried to explain, but it seemed to be in vain
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said

"I don't know what to do and that's why I've come to you
I'm at wit's end and totally perplexed
I need some sound advice so I can get on with my life"
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said

Seems I was wasting time in going down this line
Perhaps I should have seen a priest instead
For despite attempts to show the full extent of all my woes
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said

So here I am back home, lying here alone
Those words constantly echo in my head
I'll never sleep I fear for the echoing words I hear
"What do you think you should do?" was all she said!
