Winter Darkness

© Irene Conner 15/05/07

I sit alone in darkness, and I contemplate the starkness
of a night sky that has donned a coat of black.
For the stars have all been hidden by the dark clouds that have ridden
on the breezes ‘till they’ve formed a solid pack.

They have shrouded all the moonbeams that have featured in my daydreams,
and I sit here disappointed with the sight.
But a peace descends upon me, and it seems that I can soon see
moving shadows that are drifting in the night.

As my eyes become accustomed to the beauty that has blossomed
in a sky that is no longer inky black,
I can see the shadows forming – my perception is transforming –
and the clouds begin to open just a crack.

I can see a distant twinkle as the rain begins to sprinkle,
and I feel the stirrings of a gentle breeze.
There are sounds of raindrops falling, and a lonely nightbird calling,
and the whisper of the wind among the leaves.

And I find that I’m enjoying what at first I found annoying,
for it has a beauty of its very own.
And I’m finding it a pleasure, and a special time to treasure
as I sit within the darkness all alone.

Well done Irene,

I love the tempo and the mid line rhyme. The one time I tried this I found it quite difficult. Great imagery and
choice of words. I can even smell the rain on the soil. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

It seems that if we write poetry, we appreciate contemplative times and occasions. Do you find, though, that your times of reverie are sometimes disturbed by the intrusion of life?

Because:

I can hear the rain that's falling, but my wife is also calling
to come and have my capsules and my pills.
"For the weather's getting colder, and you're quickly getting older,
Come and guard yourself against the winter ills."

Cheers

Tom.

"come and have my capsules and my pills"

reminds me of when we had my granma and aunt living with us, until they passed away.  when they first moved in my granma was taking 26 tablets a day!  until the doctor we found for her, that did house visits (she was bedridden) reviewed it, and dropped her tablets down to about 16 or so.

just as well, i think if she had been up and around she certainly would have rattled when she walked! lol

Hi Zondrae, Kym and Therese - it really is lovely sitting in the darkness, no matter what the weather, isn't it??

Hi James and Tom - seems you blokes both have the same problem - getting called away from your contemplation!!!  Grin Grin
It just goes to show how lucky the blokes are to have women that care for and nurture them ( Roll Eyes Wink ). Notice that we women don't have partners worried about us coming in for tea, or reminding us to take our pills!!!   Grin  Grin (I think I can hear him asking "Where's my tea?!?   Sad Sad )
