Hi all. I am still trying to figure out the right place to put the new 'topic' for the week. I guess this is as good as anywhere because it isn't exactly a competition. It is more like a suggestion - to spark ideas - that may lead to a poem. It is surprising the varying tangents that spring from one word or phrase.

'YOU CAN DO IT...'  that's it.   I have no ideas yet.   Ross was first finished last week.

I read both 'Mr Organic' and 'Laughter' by Ross this morning. One of our members who was away last week read Thereses  'Laughter'.
As we have had contributions from WA two weeks in a row, I suggested that,  geographically,we are probably the widest spread poetry group in Australia.

- you can do it -

richard was a humble man
lived quietly on his own
barely seeing folk, from day to day
nor speaking in a harsh tone

hes always been a loner
never taken a lover to bed
not one for macho bravado
thoughts of pretense, never enter his head

last on a list of suspects
no alibi, was he asked to show
when the bank was held up, in the main street
its the quiet ones you should watch, you know

Hey Therese,

Brownie points for posting first... however, at 3am I had to get up and write mine down.
I'm not posting it yet though. There are other members (local) of our group who may pop it and read it - and the hoped for impact relies on surprise. I'll post it next Wednesday.

Our official name for the group is "Illawarra Breakfast Poets" because we meet at 7am (Yes I did say am).

This is my effort to complete the set task. which is to write something with 'you can do it' in it.

I asked to be allowed to go last!

Picture me with a black scarf and a set of rosary beads....

Confession.
© Zondrae King (Corrimal) 02/08

Forgive me friends for I have sinned
I’ve not written a  word
and I do not deserve to be
with all the poems I’ve heard.

I’ve laid awake for seven nights.
Still no inspiration
I’ve watched TV, I’ve read some books,
tried some incantation.

I sat before a vacant sheet
with pencil in my hand
but not a single word would come.
This I don’t understand.

Yes, even when I was just five.
I always was in strife
and I’ve been called a chatterbox
all through my growing life.

When I look at our task each week
I always try to take
an angle new – a different view,
eye opener to make.

I try to get the metre right
and concentrate on rhyme
I count the syllables and lines
I struggle every time.

A little voice inside my head
told me “You can do it.
Just throw some words down on the page.
Really nothing to it.”

And so you see I must confess
there’s nothing to redeem
me from the punishment for faults.
So give me a new theme.
