The awarded poem for the Illawarra Breakfast Poets weekly emailed poem is

Five Dollars
(The idea for this: the paradox of the Queen being the face of our least valued note)
Lou Mackay – Cooma

It’s like dancing with many partners
who pass her from hand to hand,
the old girl with the purple rinsed hair
just 2 hundredths off one grand.

Across counters and under benches,
into purses and pockets,
she’s carefully tucked up nice and snug
with loose change and old dockets.

And while she cannot purchase much
she elicits comfort still,
for the little things of life we love
like an amber drink to swill.

For others it’s daily papers,
and some it’s sweets delicious,
and for the really quite selective
it’s fruit that’s more nutritious.

But does she approve of handling thus
when none should touch her at all?
Does she feel valued being worth five bucks
when she owns palatial sprawl?

i'd never really thought about it like that.  how strange it would be to have your likeness on  your money, and be licking the back of your head, to send a letter! ... i don't think i'd fancy it somehow
