Driving around one day,
Something didn't seem quite right.
The crop I put in for hay
Just didn't look real bright.

I'm new to this farming game,
So I had to make a call
To a fella who has a name,
A name that says it all.

He's an educated man
An Agronomist, I'm told.
He understands the land
And all the promises it can hold.

He showed up just on smoko
In his fancy four wheel drive car
With air con, CD stereo
Fridge and mini bar.

"Let's take yours" I said
As I looked at my ute of rust
And out to the paddock we head
With his judgement I would trust.

As we headed into the crop
To show him how it did fair,
When without any warning we stop
So he could wave his bum in the air.

He says, "I'm down here looking for red legs,
See how they scour the leaf?"
And I'm left wondering if sanity begs
When searching for intellectual relief.

With both our bums in the air
The cows looked on with mirth.
We study the crop with care,
The Agro assessing its worth.

It could do with some lime,
And give these bugs a spray.
Throw it some urea at the right time
And that should save the day.

The dollar signs were flying
As I worked out the score.
Of the chemicals I'll be buying
To make things better than before.

And I considered his grand plan
As he disappeared into the dust,
And I don't need a degree to understand
Why his ute has aircon and mine has rust!!!

G'day Macca,

Good yarn about a common sight these days. I'm not sure if I would call on an "scientific" bloke or an old codger from down the road. Often experience is better than book learning. I can see them out in the paddock, nose down, bum up (so to speak) sniffing and inspecting.  Then there are those little soil samples they take away to test. Sometimes by the time the tests are back, the old codger down the road has made a suggestion and the problem is solved. I'd like to see less broad acre farming and more planting of wind brakes of native trees. This method has been shown to control the salinity problem, provide shade and protection for stock and act as corridors for wildlife. Thanks for sharing.
