G'day Zondrae and Therese
The news that you have heard is correct.
In the walk-up reciting competition that was held on the Sunday at the Snowy River Festival, I was the winner. In this competition, you could recite any bush poem or spin a yarn and it was judged on crowd response. In the end, I chose to recite one of my own poems - a reasonably recent one that I wrote back in June of this year, "The Ballad of Joan and Jack". Given a bit of time, I might put this up on the web, but not just yet. Lee Taylor-Friend finished second with one of her original poems, "Pink Purse". A local youngster came in third, John Davis from Ulladulla received one of the highly commendeds and a local competitor the other.
The written competition was announced on the Saturday. Lee Taylor-Friend took out the first and second prize in this. I can't recall the title of either poem unfortunately.
There was a poets' breakfast on Saturday morning. I recited, "When Elvis Came Back from the Dead" and Banjo Paterson's "Clancy of the Overflow". Greg North was the compere over the weekend, and I was lucky enough to be one of the "and guests" that were on the program in a couple of places on the Saturday. In my guest appearances, I recited, "The Fence Off" and Henry Lawson's "Sweeney". Frank Daniel was originally going to be compere, but had had an operation during the week before hand and was unable to attend. From all reports that I had heard, Frank was OK.
Regards
John Peel
PS ...and thank you Zondrae for your congratulations
