After posting a line out of this poem as a status on facebook, a girl commented telling me that this poem was written about her great grandfather and they called him Clancy becuase he rode a horse called the glance. I was wondering if anyone knows this story because I can't find any info on it on the net. I didn't think this poem was really written about a specific person. I read a poem about a man, dreaming about being out droving, seeing what he thinks Clancy would see, rather than a poem a bout what actually happened. It's probably more relevent today than it was back then. I am quite frequently wrong about this though, and thought I'd ask. I have had several people tell me Dorothea Mackellar was their great grandmother and so on and argue over where she was from, so I am cautious when it comes to these things.

Thanks Anige

Angie,

There are probably just as many stories as to the origin of 'Clancy' as there are about 'THE' Man from Snowy River. I would think that if you ask on the official ABPA site you would have more chance of getting something like the true story. (as they know it) But aside from some document that had been attested to by A.B. (The Banjo) Paterson (one T) himself, there would be no real way of being sure that any claim was true. It would have been so easy for a family of that generation to claim that their 'Clancy' was THE Clancy.

I would think that the real Clancy, if in fact there was one, would more than likely had the surname of Clancy and not have a nick name because of a horse. But that's just MHO.

Thanks Zondrae that was my thoughts on it too just thought I'd ask if there was an official story, I can't post on ABPA my account was deactivated or I would ask on that site. Yes it would have been very easy to cliam that and the horse being named " the glace" seems a little strange to me. Clancy doesn't even have to be the name of the person his name might have been fred but Banjo needed something else to fit the poem better! Thanks for replying I just wanted to cheak if there was an official story, I would assume I'd find one on the net if there was!

Thanks Cheesy

Yes Angie,

You would be sure that if there was a real family, they would have made claim to it before now. While I am not an expert on Paterson, (or any thing much else for that matter) I feel comfortable in saying the above. If you say your account on ABPA has been deactivated, then you will have more time to 'play' with us.  Goody. I'd love it if you decided to join in our homework. We prefer rhyme and metre verse however, free verse has been known to win the DPA. Are you familiar with our DPA? if not just say and I will explain.

'morning Angie,
What do you mean your account has been de activated on ABPA?......do you just not choose to go there or has something happened? I would have thought that you could log in any time, if you are no longer a member, that would simply mean you just cannot post in the mebers section, you can still read and post in the users section. I have commented on one your posts a couple of times and wondered why there has been no reply.....that is probably why!

If you hit the lihk below you will find a story in the Queensland Country Life about the late Jimmy Lucas.

I've aways believed that the Man from Snowy River was a bloke named Troy, but Corryong claims that Jack Riley was the 'real man'.

Thanks Joe, I followed that link and thoroughly enjoyed reading about Jimmy Lucas.  The Qld. Country Life is my husband Jim's bible, and I can't believe I missed that story in there. Again, thanks for bringing it to our attention, mate.
