This was last weeks exercise for my writers group. We were given the first line and could take it anywhere. So instead I took it nowhere.

P.C.
© Zondrae King (Corrimal) 03/07

They call me P.C. for good reason.
You see, I’m a poet concerned
with manners and things of correctness.
Our habits and customs I’ve learned.

Each culture has stuff that’s forbidden.
Excuse me if I’m butting in,
Be sure I don’t mean to offend you.
If nobody minds I’ll begin.

You won’t find a curse or a swearword
in poems that I write or recite.
I’ll caref’lly avoid every topic
that might cause a fuss or a fight.

I won’t preach about my religion.
I won’t speak of things politic
nor colour or race. They have their place
But not at a fam’ly picnic.

I won’t talk about conservation
or give you my views on the whale
or Hydrogen bomb or war in Irac
just thinking of it makes me pale.

Can’t use half the words that I used to
these days they’re no longer correct.
Don’t ask me about my agenda
cause now even genders suspect.

I’ll just stick to more tepid subjects.
I’ll keep my real thoughts to my dreams.
So now you can see why they call me P.C
I’m trying so hard to be Politically Correct that I am forced to abandon all rhyme and rhythm to finish this poem.

(I should have tried harder.)

Yes, it's a pity that we sometimes have to express ourselves with guarded honesty these days.

And I love that ridiculous ending - almost a touch of Ogden Nash?

Cheers
