Here's one for Kimmi and any other 'horsie' types ... Smiley

High in the Saddle
(c) Manfred Vijars - March 2007

I'm sitting in the saddle on my grand old chestnut mare
and hear my saddle creaking to a steady rocking pace;
among tall timbers where the wind is whispering through my hair.
Strange formations spear the sky, a truly wondrous place.

Steady on the ridge we go, the mare is feeling beaut
A kangaroo appears out front, sees us and then shoots through.
Excitement in the girth straps build - we speed up in pursuit.
Go girl and show this macropod what you can really do.

So swift it's like we're gliding and she's well within her stride
pick up the pace, she has her head but still can't catch that roo.
Then I glimpse off to my right a lion by my side.
It's keeping pace and eyeing me - Oh, what am I to do?

A quick glance back and on my tail there was the weirdest sight -
An elephant was chasing me - you think I fried my brains
Sharp drop-off on my left I'm hemmed in. What an awful plight
Stuck to my seat and holding fast I crouch and grasp the reins,

Her constant stride is holding well, I’m truly in her debt
We're riding hard to get away from this scary mob
Then I hear this voice from up above - I’m in a sweat
"Get off the kid's merry-go-round you stupid drunken slob!"

Yay - thank you Manfred!  What a great ride.  Not bad for a Hairy Nosed Wombat in a four-four.

Kym.

Now pop over to the Lugworm in Lost Poetry and talk to me there ...

What did you say that drink was called, Manfred?!?   Grin Grin Grin
Sounds like something we may all enjoy!!
And here I was thinking we were going to get an action-packed horse chase through scrubby mountain country!!! It was the lion and elephant that threw me!!

And I had visions of sitting tall in the saddle on a 16h beast, surveying all around. But alas "high", it seems, is not your position in the world, but your state of inebriated well-being.

But I loved the story, and its twist in the tail.
Thanks,
Tom.
