I was listening to some music from an old Bush Balladeer on my way to Perth yesterday, and one of his songs reminded me of the following episode.
I was returning from taking me daughter to a camp draft. We had two horses on board, and, for some reason, although I was only driving slowly, the float lost traction coming down a hill, and started swaying behind me quite badly and pushing my speed. The hill was reasonably long and steep, with a bend at the end. Still not sure to this day how I managed to get it under control, but I am sure someone was helping!!!

Have only just finished this today, so any suggestions/comments are welcome before I do some polishing!!

Driving with an Angel

© I.Conner 17/04/07

Who knows what the future is holding in store?
Who knows when our final day’s due?
For sometimes you seem to come close to the door
before God is ready for you.

I looked at the door into heavens abode
the day of that ill-fated drive,
But God sent his angel to show me the road
to travel to keep us alive.

My plea- it was heard as I started to pray;
the help that I needed was near.
My angel, she sat on my shoulder that day
and guided my hands through my fear.

With two horses loaded, we went on our way-
my daughter and I on our own..
Then traction was gone and the float had a sway –
I heard myself let out a moan.

The hillside was steep and the brakes couldn’t grip,
I knew of the bend at its base.
I’d visions of all of us doing a flip
if I couldn’t lessen the pace.

My plea- it was heard as I started to pray;
the help that I needed was near.
My angel, she sat on my shoulder that day
and guided my hands through my fear.

My daughter was crying as I fought to hold
the car and the float on the road.
My heartbeat was racing; my fear – it ran cold.
I knew I must steady the load.

With horses still swaying I dropped through the gears.
My angel’s strength soon would unfold.
The engine was screaming; my eyes filled with tears,
but then something started to hold.

My plea- it was heard as I started to pray;
the help that I needed was near.
My angel, she sat on my shoulder that day
and guided my hands through my fear.

The bend was approaching as traction returned;
we made it with nothing to spare.
I stopped by the roadside and both of us yearned
to run from that frightening scare.

I knew that we’d travelled in angel gear then -
there’s no other reason to say
just how I was able to right it again –
my angel, she saved us that day.

My plea- it was heard as I started to pray;
the help that I needed was near.
My angel, she sat on my shoulder that day
and guided my hands through my fear.

Hi Myrdynn
I just got rid of the float!!! It was always just a little too long anyway, and I got home that day, spat the dummy (only because of the shock, of course!!  Wink ) and never towed it again. Have one that tows beautifully, now. However, I'm still not keen on floating as a result.

Irene,
Thanks for that. Reminds us that we never do have the final say.
I aquaplaned in the wet some years ago, spun across the grass median onto the other side of the divided highway. I too was protected from above, but I had given up. So we're both still here.
God not ready? The bigger question is: Are we ready?

Cheers

Sounds like you were a very lucky girl, but at least you got a new horse float out of it.  Meanwhile, I have to get back to that cut and polish job to try and spruce our old float up a bit.  It's done some miles (as the stone chips prove) but we've enjoyed every trip.

It's only a two horse float, but I took seven little mini's it once.  Wasn't game to open the tailgate to get them out in case they exploded out like a bunch of hairy pingpong balls, so we reached in through the front door, clipped a lead onto whichever head was closest and got them to jump out of the front door one by one.

 Cheesy
